I would assume some of the 'failed' drugs may eventually 'succeed' in the generic market.
The BP drug, now generic, would want to decrease costs of their original version by changing their formulations and fillers, that have their own side effects, thereby introducing lower bioequivalence (the condition in which different formulations of the same drug or chemical are equally absorbed when taken into the body) to their existing customers. A person taking the same drug could have a changed outcome.
It's a nasty game and humans are the guinea pigs.
