'Habit' comes to mind as an answer to your first question. Certainly the iteration of the GOP over the past 7 years anyway.

I don't see the capacity for 'self-loathing' in most GOPERS. Not that they haven't 'earned' some. But as near as I can tell it's all 'outgoing'.
