Tim Kaine Got Ripped for Not Wearing an American Flag Pin at DNC. Here’s What His Pin Really Means

On Wednesday evening at the Democratic National Convention, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine officially accepted the party’s nomination for Vice President. But when he walked to the podium, a few people noticed something different about him.

Unlike many other candidates and speakers, Senator Kaine chose not to wear the traditional American flag pin on his lapel. This is the pin he wore instead:

The “Blue Star Flag,” also called simply “the service flag,” was first used by Army Captain Robert L. Queisser (5th Ohio Infantry) during WWI — in 1916 — to recognize his own two sons who were serving.

The number of stars indicates the number of active service members in the family.
