Sounds like an iPad issue. The ones that DON'T work are the ones where you put a dash in the middle like this : - ) (obviously, no spaces between them).
But : followed by ) is smile. followed by P is the tongue sticking out, followed by D is the big grin. And apparently either " or ; followed by ) is the winky.
