I would think maybe with the right connections, the ships could be loaded with rebar for construction, or nonprecision steel  the railroads use, on the trip back to our left coast. I can't understand why there aren't some dual service ships in the world. Something that could haul ore over there, and manufactured stuff back. In this day and age they can just about do anything the mind can think of...
