fueled by energy stocks

The S&P 500 SPX, +0.13% closed up 2.72 points, or 0.1%, at 2,112.13,
but finished well off its best levels of the session of 2,119.22. But the
advance was sufficient for the large-cap benchmark to log its best close since
July 22. The index is less than 1% off its record of 2,130.82 set May 21, 2015.
