BALTIMORE (CBSNewYork/AP) — Undefeated Nyquist, which made the mile-and-a-quarter run at the Kentucky Derby look easy, aims for the second jewel of the Triple Crown when he heads a field of 11 in the Preakness Stakes.
Nyquist is an early prohibitive 3-to-5 favorite to make it nine victories in nine starts in the mile-and-three-16ths Preakness at venerable Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Owner J. Paul Reddam, a native of Windsor, Ontario, is a lifelong fan of the National Hockey League’s Detroit Red Wings. Accordingly, he named his promising young colt after the Red Wings’ star forward, Gustav Nyquist .
Exaggerator, which ran second to Nyquist two weeks ago in the Derby, will give it another try. Exaggerator is 3-1 second choice in the morning line.
It could be a sloppy track. Rain is in the forecast for Baltimore.
The National Weather Service is predicting a 100 percent of rain throughout the day, along with wind at gusts of up to 20 mph.
Post time for the Preakness is 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
