General Motors Co. ’s Cadillac brand will import from China a plug-in hybrid version of its new CT6 luxury sedan to North America later this year, marking the second Chinese-built vehicle to be sold in the U.S. by the Detroit auto maker.
The auto maker last year mapped out plans to ship the Buick Envision, a popular crossover SUV among Chinese buyers that is built in Shandong province, to U.S. dealerships early in 2016. Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell on Tuesday said it would also import a modest amount of plug-in hybrid CT6s late this year.
A plug-in hybrid carries a battery as the primary source of power and a gasoline or diesel engine that serves as a backup power source when the battery’s juice runs out. The plug-in CT6 will be built near Shanghai, and is expected to primarily appeal to Chinese buyers who are more richly-incentivized by the government to purchase alternatively-powered vehicles.
The CT6 is Cadillac’s latest attempt to better compete with German luxury makers in China and the U.S., where Daimler AG , Audi AG and BMW AG are dominant brands. A gasoline-powered CT6 will be built near Detroit at GM’s Hamtramck assembly plant, and provide 95% of the CT6’s North American sales volume, the company said.
GM is the first major global auto maker to commit to shipping Chinese-built vehicles to the U.S. Volvo Car Corp., owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, has been shipping sedans from China to the U.S. in small volumes.
Mr. Caldwell said GM expects close to 90% of the plug-in hybrid CT6’s to be sold in China. Annual sales of the model in the U.S. are likely to be below 1,000. [/quote]
