Actually...it was the full definition. Tax collection predates any form of Socialism. Tax collection predates democracy as well.
Very strange wording here:
The popular definition of “socialism” reflects a worldview in which government takes control of everything, leading to an inevitable failure, as we have seen in the former Soviet Union and some other countries.
No...I tend to refer to Merriam-Webster for the definition of Socialism...not some opinion. the word "popular" is just plain odd use
"The fact that many “socialistic” countries are doing well, as we can see in many parts of Europe, and with Canada, does not seem to faze Americans."

And yet ...once again...the author of that bit doesn't even know the difference between Socialism and a Social Contract. None of those things stated are Socialist in nature. Socialism did not come about until circa 1800. And then...everybody's friend wrote that trash "The Communist Manifesto" circa 1850. All those things mentioned existed before socialism....and were part(in many ways) of a social Contract among those served via means of tax collection or volunteering..et al.
