China Market Challenges Plane Makers

“We don’t see any advantage from a cost perspective,” Mr. Camp said. “It’s more of a strategy for entering the market.”

He added that Chinese content may make the plane more acceptable to buyers, “ particularly government buyers, ” he said.

Intellectual property theft is a factor in the business decisions of Bill McKay, an American who makes aviation bearings and for years has been trying to figure out how to work in China without putting industrial secrets at risk. As he anticipates receiving final government certification for his product, Mr. McKay says he is feeling optimistic.

“The view from the Chinese is substantially different than it was in 1989,” Mr. McKay said from Guangzhou where his company has opened the Godfrey Guangzhou Aerospace Bearing company.

“They care about making money,” he said of his Chinese partners. “If they can make money with an American, a German or a Western partner they’ll partner up. They’re not delusional in that they can build a better bearing.”
