This is the speech that will launch 1000 attack ads from now until the first week in November.
It doesn't matter that there is no empirical evidence that the vast majority of Republicans like Willard Romney any better than they liked him in November of 2012. That most of the other declared Republican candidates have been throwing this stuff at the frontrunner for a month now, to no appreciable effect, also is beside the point.
Nobody until Willard this morning ever put it all into a coherent whole. The difference between what, say, Young Marco Rubio has been doing on the stump and what Willard did in Salt Lake City is the difference between birdshot and a bunker-buster. All that having been said, you will forgive me if I spend the rest of the afternoon luxuriating in the pure absurdity of it all.
Honestly, people.
No he isn't. His bankruptcies have crushed small businesses and the men and women who worked for them.
Willard Romney, alpha vulture capitalist at Bain, dripping with empathy for people who lose their jobs?
He inherited his business, he didn't create it.
Willard Romney, son of George, grandfather of children whose children never will have to work a day in their lives, scorning the idea of inherited privilege?
We will only really know if he is the real deal or a phony if he releases his tax returns and the tape of his interview with the New York Times. I predict that there are more bombshells in his tax returns.
Willard Romney, wife of Ann, who gave us all we needed to know, actually playing this card against anyone?
Dishonesty is Trump's hallmark: He claimed that he had spoken clearly and boldly against going into Iraq. Wrong, he spoke in favor of invading Iraq. He said he saw thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11. Wrong, he saw no such thing. He imagined it. His is not the temperament of a stable, thoughtful leader. His imagination must not be married to real power.
Willard Romney—father of the Massachusetts healthcare reform which he disowned while running for president; once more pro-gay than Teddy Kennedy; employer of undocumented workers who had to can them because he was running for office, for pete's sake—actually deploring He, Trump for being malleable in his political opinions?
Honestly, people. If you can't see the humor in this, you're not having nearly enough fun in show business.
I give Willard credit for not apologizing for his truckling to He, Trump back in 2012. (He was running for office, for pete's sake.) If he had done so, it wouldn't have mattered to Trump and his supporters, and the news coverage of the speech would have been all about the apology.
(Some day, however, Willard might condescend to admit to us all that helping to invite a vulgar talking yam into the Republican party power structure may not have been the best idea in the world.)
And, of course, according to Willard, the worst consequence of nominating Donald Trump would be the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, because e-mails and Benghazi, Benghazi!, BENGHAZI!
But what is very clear is that Willard sees the perfect Romney scenario unfolding before him.
If the party declines to nominate He, Trump, then maybe it will hand the nomination to Willard Romney—the nomination that always should have been his. No more scrabbling around with Those People in Iowa or New Hampshire.
That is the way it should have been done in 2012. If you have enough money, opportunism becomes birthright. And so, on Thursday, we saw two remarkable political events. Willard Romney laid out in detail why Donald Trump never should be president of the United States and, in doing so, demonstrated why he never will be.
If the best you can do for a nominee is He, Trump, and the best you can do for an opposition is Willard Romney, then maybe it's time to re-think this whole Republican party thing.
P.S.—That speech from Ronald Reagan that Willard kept shouting out? That was given in 1964 in support of an extremist outsider named Barry Goldwater, who upset the GOP establishment applecart and got crushed in the general election that fall.
Every rake Young Marco Rubio has stepped on this year had Willard's footprint on it.

So we have a big bag of feathers (the Rubiot) vs an unctuous snake handler (T-ruse) vs the factory floor sweepings of the Republican party machine shop (heaven only knows), vs Donald Trump.
All he has to do is remind the party of stupid just how corrupt his adversaries are and? Voila, Mittens' magic underwear dissolves in the rinse cycle.
