well, if tom didn't step down AND he is no longer with the company, there are very few scenarios that are left. have you considered that maybe he was asked to leave? such as being fired.
i suppose its possible he could have retired, or maybe was assassinated like a ninja but i wouldn't give those ideas too much credence.
