I can assure you that neither I nor anyone I knew was a 'fan' of Selective Service/conscription.
I decided that I didn't want the uncertainty of coming home to find that envelope. I walked into a USMCR center and they were happy to see my 19 year old ass.
5 weeks later I'm on Parris Is. and thinking WTF!? What were you thinking?!
Anyway, draft calls were up to 30,000/month by the time my six months were done. 2D on my new Selective Service card, 'member of reserve component'. Army couldn't touch me, Because my ass..... ..belonged..... to....the..... Corps.
I've come around to think it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring the draft back, no college deferments. You know, to give 'pause', stop, think.
More skin in the game, a declaration of war and a tax hike to pay for it.
Think THAT wouldn't make some otherwise belligerent mofos stop to think about it? Bet it would, bet it would.
