We are not a 'Republic under God'.
One Nation...under god was inserted in the pledge of allegiance in the early 50's as a push back to 'godless communism'. The pledge had no mention of god up until that point. The US Constitution, the governing document, has no mention of god.
The Constitution is explicitly secular, stipulating that there be no religious test to hold office, and requiring that Congress make NO law respecting an establishment of religion....no State church.
And of course 'free exercise 'of religion is protected from Congressional intrusion too.
I once pointed out to a friend who insisted that there was no harm in
public school sanctioned prayer that he would change his mind, and learn the phone number for the ACLU, the first time his kid came home and described the Muslim morning call to prayer piped in over the intercom.
I think he got it. But ya never know with your Republican Taliban!
