and holding short positions does not make you a long. most short positions need to be settled in a one day period of time, though i think that is different for other stocks.
i have a friend that took out a short position on blackberry and it didn't go well for him. he's been delaying settling that position for years though i'm not sure how he can do that as the time frame seems wrong.
