We, as a society must ask why are so many kids going down the university prep path? i don't think it is as simple as laziness. I think it is misinformed indoctrination. Our pathetic high schools, politicians and many parents are spewing the falsehood that the only way to be successful in this country is with a college education. In fact, if you go on to most high school campuses, you will be hard pressed to find a good trade school tract. I tried to get our school district in Fort Collins to investigate this to no avail.
Simply put, We should change our high school system to separate the fast track university kids from the trade school kids. the trade school kids would learn only the material that will make them better trade workers such as:
(1) Business management
(2) team leadership
(3) managing/participating in apprenticeships
(4) small business marketing
(5) sales tactics
(6) program management
(7) Web development (intro class so that the individual knows what his web contractor is doing)
( Microsoft office proficiency
(9) basic accounting and how to select an accountant
(10) building a better trade union.
And, of course, practical lessons in the trade they are interested in. perhaps this component is a one year course after all the basic courses I outlined above is complete. Perhaps this last course is managed through the Junior College system.
Finally, after all of this, the individual decides that he wants to go back to the university track, they can catch up utilizing the junior college system to prep for the last two years of university.
obviously, there is an immigration control component that we need to get a handle on as this is impacting our labor force. But, that is a discussion of much greater reach.
