It's been well documented over the last number of years that the regulatory authorities have issued fines and rebukes of individuals and firms over questionable/illegal practices in the financial arena. My hope is that with the recent focus on federal civil and criminal court cases that penalties with teeth can be implemented that create true change particularly with the financial gatekeepers. Obviously a million dollar fine here and there has done nothing to change the mindset and profit base of the status quo over the years. Will the current effort make a difference? I am hopeful but always skeptical given past history. Maybe a federal judge can do what the SEC and FINRA have failed to do with any degree of long term effectiveness.
