It was William Randolph Hearst who got the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 passed through the power of his newspapers. This was a direct result of the Uniform State Narcotic Drug Act of 1932 which he editorialized. It was found later that he was pandering to the corporate interests of DuPont as well as protecting his own substantial forest products interests against the rise of industrial hemp which could be used for paper rather than his paper from the huge tracts of forests in the Northwest that he owned.
