ZFNG said it learned Tuesday that a patient being treated with beloranib for Prader-Willi syndrome was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary emboli--blood clots to the lung--and died.
Prader-Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder that results in life-threatening obesity because of unrelenting hunger. There is no cure for the disease, which affects one in 12,000 to 15,000 people, according to Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.
This isn't the first time a patient has died in Zafgen’s beloranib study. Back in October, a patient passed away for unknown causes; subsequently the FDA put beloranib on partial clinical hold. However this is the only drug available and ZFNG is investigating the circumstances around this event which could be unrelated to this drug.
