A watermark is an overlayed, mostly translucent logo (imagine a very light frost on a window in the shape of a logo) that enables you to see the image well enough to appreciate it, but disrupts the full experience. It's removed after a purchase is made, but remains if the digital file was stolen, which discourages theft.
