They were only able to do it because some wanting in were bidding rather than hitting the ask - exactly what not to do in this situation as it makes it relatively 'cheap" to make a sacrificial dump into the bid by anyone wanting to create the illusion that there is a lot of selling going on. It's been going on for months.
