Looking back...
I see that I missed an interesting point from back in 2002...looks like Dr.J & Dr.Alivisatos have had a mutual respect thing going for each other, that was more direct than I had thought:

In retrospect, their predictions for the nearterm realization of these techs missed the mark , but it seems like these 2 guys could do wonders together nevertheless, if they had closer ties
