they don't have to "show up", they just need to file an answer. A courier can do this. In some cases it can be mailed to the court. As long as it is time stamped by the clerk it is considered there. Then the judge will set a pre trial and pre trial order with all of the files that need to be submitted to the court before the pre trial.
