the futility of the twice monthly version of a short report has been discussed many times and is well known in the stock world-see e.g., my post below and 4kids9pets and 7-10-11 's posts on ihub.
mm's have at least a dozen ways to hide the true number of shorts -see references above for details- and with the twice monthly reports they have many days to do so.
the reg.sho finra.org /ORF FINRA daily ''short volume'' is much more accurate and reflects about what mistevel reported for the day i checked

and this graphic shows the futility of relying solely on the twice monthly short report -even if such didnt hide true shorts-as shorts swing wildly from even friday to monday's sometimes
look e.g. at huge short volume dec 29-30
