they can hold on to the yield sign a long time. after that comes a stop sign. even that doesn't mean it is dead. this usually happens when a company is trying to restructure. now if they become delisted it is a different story. they can't trade for a year, but even then once in awhile they can recover. It takes awhile from here to get to delisting.
