Perhaps it's not to keep the shareholder in the dark, but to conceal as much as much as possible from competitors. SEC regulations only require quarterly updates. The company is clearly meeting the requirements for updates on share count. In my view, if an investor is so nervous as to need daily or weekly updates on share count, they are clearly in the wrong investment.
