In December 2014, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave orphan drug approval to mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor as a treatment for retinitis pigmentosa. The naturally occurring protein works by inhibiting apoptosis. "That's exciting because it's bringing cells back to life," says Dr Bhavsar.
