Level 3, NTT and TeliaSonera Lead the Pack, While Sprint, AT&T and Verizon Dipped
MANCHESTER, NH--(Marketwired - Jan 8, 2014) - Renesys has released its annual ranking of the world's largest Network Service Providers (NSPs), showcasing networks that offer the greatest global reach to enterprises and cloud service providers in 2014. The Renesys "2013 Baker's Dozen" identifies the 13 best-connected networks worldwide, based on customer connectivity data sampled directly from the Internet's global routing system. "We've watched as global demographics have changed what has historically been a US-centric Internet," says Jim Cowie, Renesys CTO. "Since 2006, the first year we did this research, Sprint has fallen from #1 to #7, Verizon from #3 to #8, and AT&T from #5 to #14, falling off this year's list entirely. In high-growth emerging markets, an enterprise is now more likely to purchase Internet services from Stockholm-based TeliaSonera (#3), Mumbai-based Tata (#6), or Hong Kong-based PCCW (#10)."
The rankings reflect another important trend for CIOs to observe in 2014: fierce competition in the global markets for Internet connectivity, with corresponding drops in price. "Enterprise customers today find themselves buying extra Internet connectivity from two or even three of these NSPs to reach cloud services, simply because prices per megabit have never been better," says Cowie. "That increased diversity can pay off strategically if a single provider develops problems on their backbone, because traffic can switch seamlessly to a different connection. These days, stability and performance of Internet service are fundamental to the customer's experience."
