"It seems like MANF has two effects, proliferation of remaining tissues and protection of remaining tissues from cell death by modulating the function of cell survival enzyme. We may be able to activate this specific cell survival enzyme by a drug."

This statement suggests he is trying to go a different way, at least in treating wolframs. The eye may be another matter.
