"Someone has stolen your reverse transmission. The forward transmission is still there, but the reverse transmission is simply missing. Maybe you parked the car at a mall or something where the theft took place, and there wasn't enough time to grab both transmissions. In any case, we'll need to reinstall a new reverse transmission, unless you're okay with parking on the street and not in the driveway."
Car owner:
"Let me shop around, and I'll get back to you. I'm an intellect and very capable of getting a lower price myself. Is getting a rebuilt reverse transmission an option here?"
Service technician:
"Sure, buddy, we can do that. Smart of you to ask."
