It depends on how you define "microorganism". A lot of scientists interpret that as bacteria and other small living cells. Since a virus is not technically "alive" (depending on who you ask), it may or may not cover them as well. This is assuming the patent is granted.

Worst case scenario is they have to wait a little while to get coverage over viruses and bacteria.
