I think we get a bit too hung up on the BOD, their visibility to the public, etc. Typically BOD members are involved with the company's high level operations/direction, but formally meet/conference infrequently - ie - once per month. Yes, there is correspondence throughout the month, but they are not what you would consider regular employees that are working 50+ hours/week for the company.
They are able to use their network to ease the path of company endeavors and advise their expertise to the CEO to ensure that the strategic vision is achieved. I don't expect to see any of them in front of a camera or providing interviews.
My experience is with BOD's in the automotive sector. Although this is a significantly different business entity, I don't see where BOD activity/roles will be significantly different.
