Monday Feb 13, 2012 - February 14 is Valentine’s Day, a day for lovers but it is also a condom awareness day - National Condom Day. This day aims to raise awareness of safe sex and the reasons for it. Today we live in a world where unwanted pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS, are on the increase.
As Kenyans celebrate this two significant events, the country is set to open a condom factory which will begin production in the next four months. The factory will be located in Thika and is expected to produce about 150 million condoms every year for local consumption.
This is a sigh of relief to the Kenyan government and aid agencies who were on a tight spot last year over the shortage of condoms.
Kenya needs about 360 millions condoms annually.
National Aids Control Council Boss Alloys Orago says condom consumption will double this year because of increasing awareness on its use.
