A .22 sounds up to the task without causing the neighbors to call the police 
I've been teaching my 8 year old how to shoot rotten pears, peaches, and apples from the fruit trees in our backyard. Based on the way a pear explodes from a .22LR round, I can only imagine what a bird head would do!
