Question: Is the new process a practical consequence of disbanding the standing methods committees?

Answer: Traditional methods committees had essential elements that lent credibility to the Official Methods of AnalysisSM. Each committee was assembled around the specific topic area; represented a balance of government, industry, and academia; supported by recognized experts (General Referees, Statistics and Safety Advisors); served as a source of new methods and, just as importantly, as a recruiting tool for future leaders within AOAC. Most of these essential tools were not going to be directly replaced by the current method-centric committees. The Official Methods of AnalysisSM is more than just a compendium of methods. They are consensus standards and should represent the very best analytical tools available.
