Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, said it will ask a bankruptcy judge for permission to liquidate after failing to obtain wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its workers. The move could mean nearly 600 jobs lost at bakeries in Schiller Park and Hodgkins.

  • After 82 years in business, Hostess Brands is closing its doors after succumbing to the crippling effects of a nationwide union strike.

The closing will result in Hostess' nearly 18,500 workers losing their jobs as the company shuts 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide, as well as 570 outlet stores. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union represents around 5,000 Hostess employees.
