USEC Inc. Surging On Additional Funding From Department Of Energy
USEC Inc. (USU) closed up 143.89% today after news of its 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding new funding, of $2.5 million, from the US Department of Energy (DOE). The funding comes following an amendment to an agreement with a research lab operator for further research on American Centrifuge technology.
The agreement was first established as a fixed price contract under which approximately $33.7 million will be paid between May 1 and September 30, on a $6.7 million per-month payment plan.
The stock’s average trading volume has been slightly over 82,000 shares. However, today’s trading volume went as high as 7.5 million. The unusual activity in trading today led the Securities and Exchange Commission to inquire with USEC, to which the company responded that “its policy is not to comment on unusual market activity.”
Year-to-date, USEC is up 28.3%. The stock has returned around 66% in the past year. However, in the past five years, USEC has seen significant declines; it changed hands for as high as $161 in July 2009 but closed today at $7.39.
