I am an investor in JBI, Inc. (JBII).  I am writing to you because you cosigned the August, 2011, agreement between JBII and RockTenn (RKT).

I hope you don't mind taking a couple of minutes to answer a few questions about the RKT plastic waste that JBII will be processing into fuel.

I am trying to understand the plastic waste that is generated by RKT processes and the plastic waste that RKT has been landfilling on RKT properties.

I am familiar with raggertail from the cardboard recycling process.  How much of the plastic waste generated by RKT processes is in this form?

Could you please describe any RKT processes that result in a "pure" plastic waste stream?

In its August 8, 2011, press release JBII describes the RKT landfills as both "plastic-filled monofills" and "plastic-only monofills."  Do the "monofills" include the raggertail waste?  If they do, has the raggertail already been pre-processed to remove the metal?  If they do not, where has the raggertail been landfilled and why has RKT not recovered the metal from that waste?

If the monofills are correctly described as "plastic-only," from which processes does this plastic waste originate?

RockTenn paper mills recycle approximately 3.5 million tons of recovered paper per year, mostly old corrugated containers (OCC). OCC contains varying amounts of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and other plastics due to laminations, inserts and tape used in the boxes. Our recycling processes generally separate large pieces of plastic and metal wires from the re-pulping operation using a “ragger tail”. The ragger tail is only cut in 10- to 20-feet lengths before disposal. The rest of the plastic is generally removed in pulper de-trashing and coarse screening. The rejects from the latter two operations are mostly clean plastic that is dewatered before disposal. Typically our mills generate 30 to 40 dry pounds  each of ragger tail and miscellaneous plastic rejects per ton of OCC recycled. Currently some of our mills dispose these materials through third parties, while others have on-site monofills. Trial loads of ragger tail have been processed at the JBI Plastic-2-Oil facility in Niagara Falls.

Does " RockTenn paper mills recycle approximately 3.5 million tons of recovered paper per year" refer to  each mill or  all mills?  If it is  each mill, how many mills perform OCC recycling?

Do you know how many years RockTenn has been storing this waste in monofills?

I'm sorry to bother you again.  I really don't want to be a nuisance.

But what does the word "each" refer to in this sentence: " Typically our mills generate 30 to 40 dry pounds each of ragger tail and miscellaneous plastic rejects per ton of OCC recycled. "

Does "each" refer to "each mill," or does "each" refer to "30 to 40 dry pounds of ragger tail AND 30 to 40 pounds of miscellaneous plastic rejects?"

Also, the numbers you provided work out to 300+ tons per day of plastic being generated by the OCC recycling process.

JBII claimed in its PR: " RockTenn's paper mills and MRFs currently produce thousands of tons of plastic per day."

Is the difference due to the RKT MRF facilites generating that much more plastic waste in addition to that generated from OCC recycling?

Well, not a complete clarification of the situation, but there is definitely plastic-only and raggertail waste.

If there really is a plan to process raggertail, then it doesn't make sense that they are continuing to landfill that waste.
