New York Senators Vote to Pass Medical Marijuana Bill
New York Senators voted on June 20th to pass the Compassionate Care Act that legalizes medical marijuana. This makes New York the 23rd state to legalize the use of marijuana to treat certain diseases. Senators negotiated the language of the bill until midnight the night before in order to have a law that Governor Cuomo would sign. The Governor did not want the marijuana to be smoked and wanted a five year evaluation period. The bill's sponsor Senator Diane Savino made it a seven year evaluation and eliminated the review committee instead giving that power to the Department of Health.
