First, your statement that the NP-1 needed bugs fixed is misapplied. We shipped many NP-1 and many OEM versions of the NP-1 using Android 4.2.
The goal of the NP-1 is to provide a platform for non-smart TVs to stream 4K content from our UltraFlix channel. Many of the content partners that we have been dealing with have a certain set of requirements for the security and performance of the system. The result of those requirements was that we needed to move to Android 4.4, a brand new version of the OS. During the porting of our apps, and the operating system with our customizations, issues and bug arose, which is normal in any software environment. some were ours, some belonged to Google, some belonged to third parties.
Because of our new security system, this update requires a factory install. The decision was made to not ship out retail units of NP-1 that would require a return to factory for upgrade, and instead the retail units would be held until the update was completed.
