John Mitchell wins the Grand Prize for Non-Fiction with his debut memoir: The Boy Who Lived With Ghosts

NEW YORK, N.Y., May 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - The Boy Who Lived With Ghosts is selected as the First Place Grand Prize Winner, Non-Fiction, 2014. Announced at New York City's prestigious Harvard Club, amongst authors, publishers and literary agents, Mitchell's memoir was described as, "Startling and breathtakingly original. A book that will make you cry and laugh. It will affect you profoundly and will never leave you."

Mitchell's debut memoir has been widely acclaimed as unique for authentically capturing a story through the eyes of a young boy. It is a disturbing, though darkly funny, account of a sibling witnessing first-hand his sister's decent into madness. "Childhood-onset schizophrenia is fortunately very rare," Mitchell commented, "But schizophrenia affects one in one hundred families in America today."

The ghosts in this book are metaphors for poverty, addiction, insanity and abuse. Through the innocent observations of a five-year-old, the reader is taken on a stunning coming-of-age story in 1960's England that intertwines the horror with a profound sense of survival. Thankfully, the Dickensian cast of misfits, who are the real-life family, bring welcome moments of dark humor to the tragedy.
