Being optimistic is fine, but Mr. Bordynuik made some real claims about the technology, specifically that his pyrolysis produced an oil for under $10/bbl for which refineries offered him near WTI spot prices, currently around $100/bbl. That's not true. That's fraud.
Real claims don't require serious investors to be optimistic, but they do require the person who made those claims to be honest. So it depends on whether you prefer optimism over real results.
