Obama arrived in Malaysia to focus on trade, defense and maritime security at a 600-guest state dinner, where he spoke of a new era of collaboration--or bekerjasama--between the U.S. and Malaysia.

Mr. Obama told the Malaysian newspaper The Star that he hoped to formalize a comprehensive partnership here and reinforce the priority that he places on this region.

This visit "reflects the renewed leadership role that the United States is playing in the Asia Pacific," Mr. Obama said in the interview. "Since I took office, I have made expanding our ties with the nations and peoples of Southeast Asia a centerpiece of that strategy."

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has said that the visit could cast his country in a fresh light and that Malaysia is poised to play a bigger role in the region and on the world stage.

Mr. Obama is the first U.S. president to visit Malaysia since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966
