For anyone who still may be interested, my son's diagnosis came in today (and yes, he did spend the weekend in the hospital - needs 10 days of intravenous anti-biotics - but so many people visited him he had a wonderful day on Sunday).
Congenital pyriform sinus fistula.......which basically means he has an opening like a tube (fistula) from his throat (pyriform sinus) to his thyroid, left there from birth (congenital), that enabled a bacteria to travel down that tube and infect his thyroid.
Once the infection is cleared, the cure seems to be to find the opening in the throat and then to cauterize it, creating scar tissue that will block the opening to the tube.
And yes, it is quite rare. Dr. Sun at Good Samaritan in West Islip is an absolute genius.
Thank God for him and for the simplicity of the complication (lol?)...............
