As an example say there are 100 shares of stock and each share is worth $1.00. The company itself purchases 50 of those 100 shares and retires those 50 shares. There now are 50 shares of stock worth $2.00 remaining. If my explanation is incorrect or I have left something out I'm sure I will be corrected.
