Legal Girl: The simple point here is that the letter attributed to Gomez doesn't lose any points, as feared, because the writer spelled the plant as "marihuana." It's not a misspelling. In fact, marihuana predates the word marijuana and is the original word, "marijuana" being a later Anglicized variant. "Marihuana" is used in new laws and statutes to preserve legal continuity with the primary spelling.
If Gomez is Spanish, then it makes the case even stronger that he is the letter writer.
"The original Mexican Spanish used forms with the letter 'h' ( marihuana ). Forms using the letter 'j' ( marijuana ) seem to be an innovation of English , though they later appeared in French and in Spanish, probably due to English influence "
In Roman Latin, as you know, there was no "j". The Romans used "i". The name Julius Caesar was written in Rome as iulius caesar.
