Fan means fanatic, a word that applies to religious zealots. The hundreds of billions of dollars and countless days and hours spent on Big Sports per year prove its central importance to most of America.

Suddenly, NFL Commissioner Goodell, a fanatic for zero tolerance, changes his tune and now envisions use of mmj for "injured players." Goodell's change of mind is almost like a pope issuing an edict that overturns a long held doctrine. It's a confirmation and a capitulation, i.e., MMJ works and nothing can stop it from going mainstream.
