"Finally, for anyone who hopes to make “clean coal” a reality, the ultimate goal is carbon capture and storage—keeping carbon dioxide out of the earth’s atmosphere. Capturing the carbon is fairly easy; the problem is, what to do with it. According to the Kentucky Enquirer, the University of Kentucky is partnering with a northern Kentucky power station on an interesting answer: feed the carbon to algae. Flue gas from Duke Energy’s East Bend station is fed through a tank full of algae. The little organisms eat about half the carbon; they themselves can then be harvested for feed, fertilizer, or biofuel. The system is self-contained and can be monitored from a cell phone.

Finally, in other carbon capture news, the Obama administration announced that it’s investing $84 million in 18 different carbon-capture projects across the country. SNL Financial reports that 15 of the 18 funded projects are focused on finding ways to capture carbon at existing US coal-fired power plants in advance of new anticipated rules that will limit carbon emissions at existing coal-fired plants."
