I believe that it is because there a far more stupid people in the world than there are intelligent! Plain & simple. Some must love to lose money! It's only a loss when you actually sell.  If you can't take the ups & downs, then stop looking at your brokerage account. (that was meant for the stupid people! Not you raving fan.)
