Until the 1900's you were limited to mechanical bilge pumps,a lot more labor intensive-what year are you sailing in?
Yes, for you younguns most did not have electricity or indoor plumbing until after WW1,some still dont. Some would even die without the internet,not generally accessible by the public til 1997,and it was so slow. Soap as we know it wasnt even invented til 1879 so people stunk,unless enveloped in the winds of the high seas,which is why some of the worst offenders were put in the crows nest.
